2025 Hyundai Elantra N vs 2025 Honda Civic Type R
You would think that the Elantra N and Civic Type R would be around the same price, but can you believe that the Civic Type R is about $12k more? Next, you might be wondering if it's worth the extra cost, and to that we say not at all. The Elantra N has incredible enough power already with all of the fixings that come with a high-performance car, not to mention the styling. You wouldn't be getting much more going with Honda unless you count a drained wallet.

Performance
What comes in the Elantra N? Under the hood, you'll find a whopping 2.0L turbo GDI engine capable of 276 horsepower and 289 lb.-ft. of torque. Hyundai catered to every kind of driver with the choice between a 6-speed manual transmission and an N 8-speed wet dual-clutch system. All of this comes in a stiff chassis for greater handling, but there are even more driving enhancements to get excited about in the Elantra N:
- N Mode Launch Control
- N Grin Shift
- N Corner Carving Differential
- Variable Exhaust Valve System
- Electronically controlled suspension
- High-performance brakes
The main attraction of the new Civic Type R is the 2.0L turbo VTEC engine that can put out up to 315 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Before you get too excited, the Civic Type R's biggest downfall is that it only comes in a manual transmission setup. So if you don't know how to drive a stick, then you're out of luck. Trust us when we say that you're not missing out on much, though. After all, you're unlikely to notice the difference in just a little bit of horsepower. What you will notice is the lack of exclusive driving features. While the Elantra N supports brand-specific enhancements, the Civic Type R has what you would call the bare minimum for a performance car like an adaptive damper system, a limited-slip differential, and Brembo brakes.
Safety Features
Go with any other sports car and you'll just get obligatory safety features. Choose the new Elantra N, and you get a wealth of safety and driver-assist features courtesy of Hyundai. The brand's standard SmartSense package comes with much more than you would expect from your average ride which is a relief for such high-performance sedans like the Elantra N. So know that when you're on the road enjoying the thrills of peak sportiness, you're not alone.
Many will be sorely disappointed to find that the Civic Type R offers the same as the Civic's base model in terms of driver-assist features. You would think that being sportier would mean a bigger concern for your safety, but that's simply not the case here. All you get is your typical collision mitigation, road departure mitigation, and rearview camera systems with the only significant difference that distinguishes the Civic Type R being the ACE body structure.
Interior
We have a pretty good idea of what a high-end sports car should look like, and Hyundai delivered with exceptional prowess. The new Elantra N features N Light Sport leather bucket seats with delightful Alcantara inserts as a display of both style and comfort. The exclusives keep coming with a specially-designed N leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. The Elantra N also excels in advanced tech like a wide 10.25-inch infotainment and driver display combo, complete with a Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charging pad.
When you get into the Elantra N, it's obvious that you're in a Hyundai N car. When you step into the Civic Type R, the interior looks like a carbon copy of the cheaper, base model Civic but with red and black seats. It's clear that Honda decided to do the bare minimum when designing the Civic Type R, and we see right through it.
Bottom Line
Don't overpay for the Civic Type R just to realize it's a glorified base model Civic. Put your money where it matters by going with the new 2025 Hyundai Elantra N which offers a unique experience compared to its base model counterpart. It's clear that Hyundai put extra effort into making a sports car that stands out from the rest, but we can't say the same for Honda.
